Monmouth to the Sea

Wyesham and the Duke’s water is the first beat downstream of Monmouth. (The Monmouth to Estuary section is where the majority of Wye salmon are caught). It comprises 2½ miles of prime double bank salmon fishing, on the border between England and Wales and it has good fly fishing throughout.
Set in the beautiful lower Wye Valley where the steep wooded banks begin to narrow forming the lower Wye gorge, this lower section of the river Wye below Monmouth benefits from being close to the tidal limit. Rotating beats with excellent fly fishing on all.

Private Syndicate

Around ½ mile of left bank lower Wye salmon fishing midway between Wyesham and Bigsweir. A low water beat that fishes best when the Redbrook NRW gauge is reading 1m or less, ideally between 0.5m or 0.7m.  The beat is capable of holding a good stock of fish over the whole length. The riverbed is mostly large rocks and wading is difficult and unnecessary except to get on to Bakers Crib. Except for Cadora Stream, the beat in appearance is not classic fly water though the fish do respond well to the fly if the water is clear enough.

Approx. ¾ mile of left bank fishing a mile downstream of Redbrook and about three miles above Bigsweir. This part of the river flows through a wooded, steep-sided valley and is where the river’s most prolific salmon fisheries are located. The beat has 5 named pools, receives fresh fish from the tide most days and has good fly and spinning water. The fishery has secure, off-road parking although the hut is retained for private use only.
Wading difficulty is varied, with some deep wading on a largely gravel riverbed with the occasional boulder. There are some croys to fish from in the middle and lower sections. Steps and ladders make access to the pools fairly easy. A Ghillie is usually available and can be contacted on 07923 210376 for his services or information prior to arrival. Should visiting rods wish to use the boat, they have to be accompanied by and make prior arrangements with the Ghillie. An additional rod maybe added for the owner or his appointee use at any time so exclusivity is not guaranteed.

Premier salmon fishing beat on the lower Wye. This part of the river is undoubtedly the best throughout the season. Lots of deep pools and runs, this beat has a significant todal influence from the Severn Estuary helping to replenish it with plenty of fresh fish.
